JAJA BU SWEETNESS

This week, Los Angeles electronic artist and producer Jaja Bu makes his debut with ‘Sweetness’. There’s practically no information out there about this West Coast newcomer, so let’s move on from the biography and talk about the song, which as far as first releases go is great. For contemporary electronic music lovers, you’re in for a real treat of swirling synths, heartbeat percussion, poppy vocals, melodramatic piano progressions, R&B vibes, burning guitar notes and forever alternating tempos. It’s totally imaginable that Jaja Bu, whoever he is, spent a long while perfecting each sultry element of ‘Sweetness’. He’s clearly more than another kid with a laptop, as shown through the unique moments of watery backing vocals and minimal beats leading up to a trap section and that in itself blending into a dropping rhythm, almost like a recording a drums (or bongos?) has been slowed right down. A large part of the appeal of ‘Sweetness’ has got to be the fact that we can’t quite place our finger of the origin of many of those peculiar and addictive electronics. - HT
